The past few years have seen a sudden resurgence of the fantasy genre, with epic movies such as Lord of the Rings, the Chronicles of Narnia and the Harry Potter series taking over the box office as well as huge television shows such as Game of Thrones and Grimm topping the viewing lists. It’s not set to change any time soon as the fantasy genre will be going strong throughout 2012-2014 without any signs of slowing down.

When watching these movies you may be struck by the amazing hairstyles on offer. Of course many of these support the super-long, super-unpractical Arthurian hairstyles, but others provide their female protagonists and their elfin features with pixie hairstyles that instantly update their overall sex appeal.

How short?!

The truth of the matter is that those who are thinking about getting a pixie hairstyle should realise that it means going very short, which is hard to pull off if you’re the wrong person. We’ve always maintained that anyone can suit a hairstyle depending on the styling but it is much harder with a cut this short and pixie hairstyles really do limit themselves to a certain group of people with certain features.

You’ve pretty much got to have a moderately well-defined jaw and petite facial features, otherwise it doesn’t have a lot of hope of working. In addition, without meaning to sound harsh, the pixie look generally looks better on those who are of an average to slim build. This is mainly due to the removal of the length around the face, as this can exaggerate features and make your face look plump.

Whose look can I copy ?
There are tons of celebrities who have sported the pixie look over the years and it’s always a cut that’s on trend. It is so easy to maintain due to the tiny length and it suits any hair colour. Amongst the most favoured and copied celebrity do’s include Natalie Portman’s mid-stage pixie cut, an after-effect of having shaved her head for a movie role. Natalie was lucky to have had such amazing bone structure, as she carried off all lengths of hair impeccably and this as one of the most favoured haircuts amongst the public. In addition, Victoria Beckham’s hair caused a stir, as did Emma Watsons more recent, dramatic cut, which highlights her beautiful cheekbones and dainty nose, something her long hair hid from viewers. Sticking with the ethereal trend, Winona Ryder’s pixie cut was coveted amongst people during the nineties as well as Halle Berry’s. They are quite versatile in their appearance, which is something many people don’t realise at first. Pixie hairstyles can look sleek and sweet like Katie Holmes’ or Audrey Tatou’s or a bit more rock’n’roll as seen on the likes of Pink, Rihanna and Keira Knightley.

Trust in your hairdresser when you go for the pixie cut and you can’t go far wrong. If you’re open and honest they will ensure you don’t go for a cut that won’t suit your face and you will come away with a new found sense of confidence. It’s a shame that so many individuals aren’t brave enough to make the move for a new, sexy hairstyle but if you’re brave enough to get a pixie cut you’ll be joining the few with a sexy new edge.
